The Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club is an organization that was founded in 1948. A board of directors holds monthly meetings to organize club events and trail rides for the year. The annual meeting is held in January proceeded by a soup supper. Two card parties are also held each year during the winter months. Membership fees are $10.00 for family and $5.00 for single membership. Dues are to be paid in order to receive a ride schedule. They can be paid at the annual meeting or given to one of the board members at any time.

The club hosts several evening or Sunday afternoon trail rides in Northeast Iowa plus two rides in the Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin area each year beginning in May and ending in late October. Each Sunday ride is hosted by a club member and begins with a potluck at 11:30. Some members take advantage of the state recreational parks in the area hosting a ride at Backbone, Yellow River and Volga Lake.

Whistlin’ Bit is also host to a member appreciation ride which is usually held in July at the Elkader City Park. The appreciation ride starts with a short Saturday evening ride followed by a potluck supper with the club providing the meat and beverages for all. Overnight camping is available for those who wish to stay.
A Fun Show is held each year for all members at the club’s arena at the Elkader City Park. Club members compete in all games customary to a regular horse show, including Barrels, Pole bending, Plug race and several other timed events. Kid’s competition is held first followed by adult events. Members pay a small fee to compete for ribbons and trophies. Adults also pay a small entry fee to compete for a cash payback based on the placing of each event. The Fun Show is sometimes held the Sunday of the appreciation ride weekend.

The Whistlin’ Bit’s largest event is the Annual Ride held on the second Sunday of October each year. The ride begins at 11:00 with a local organization providing a lunch stand at the halfway point. This ride has been known to draw up 800+ riders from as far away as Texas & Oklahoma.
